Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist stated in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the company, and look forward tracking their progress".
The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed messages demonstrated that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the AI firm said it accepted his determination to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the Board," the organization remarked.
Legislative Background
This news follows after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on recently to approve a bill that would require the US justice department to release its documents on Epstein.
The measure will then proceed to the desk of President Trump for signature. Trump has indicated he expects to endorse the legislation, after reversing his view on the matter following objections from his followers.
Message Details
A collection of Epstein-related correspondence made public by the Congressional committee last week mentioned numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The messages showed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often trying to introduce the official to influential global figures.
Personal Response
After the messages were made available with the general audience, he expressed he took "full responsibility for my poor decision to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he desired "to restore trust and fix relationships with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers held high-level positions under party leaders; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He headed the university from five years and continues to be a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles previously on Monday, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in DC where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was not connected with the institution.
He joined the leadership of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
